Bite a mouthful of rice, swallow it, and roughly a metre of tubing later a handful of glucose molecules show up in your bloodstream. Nothing about that journey is automatic — every stage exists to solve one specific problem, and O-Level examiners love testing whether you know which stage does what.
The Five-Stage Chain, and Why the Order Can't Be Shuffled
Picture trying to post a brick through a letterbox — it simply won't fit, so first you'd have to smash it into dust. Your gut faces the same mismatch: food arrives as lumps far too large to cross into blood, so the body runs it through five stages, each one only possible once the last is done. Ingestion gets food into the mouth. Digestion smashes large food molecules into small, soluble ones — partly by chewing, mostly by enzymes. Absorption lets those small molecules cross the gut lining into the blood. Assimilation is the body actually putting them to use — building tissue, storing energy. Egestion clears out whatever was never broken down. Miss a stage from an answer and examiners read it as a genuine gap, not a typo, because each one depends entirely on the one before it finishing first.
Worked Example — Tracing a Mouthful of Bread Through the Gut
- Bread is mostly starch. Chewing in the mouth breaks it into smaller lumps and mixes in saliva, which supplies an enzyme that starts converting starch into a shorter sugar chain.
- The mixture passes down a muscular tube into the stomach. No starch-digesting enzyme works well in this acidic environment, so the starch chain simply travels through unchanged at this point.
- In the small intestine, a second dose of the same starch-digesting enzyme (released from a nearby gland) finishes converting every remaining starch chain into pairs of glucose units.
- A separate enzyme then splits each pair into single glucose molecules — small enough, finally, to cross the gut lining and enter the blood.
Notice two enzymes were needed, not one — a common mark-loser is assuming a single enzyme finishes starch digestion in one step.
