Pick a flower apart and every piece turns out to have exactly one job: producing sex cells, moving them across to another flower, or keeping the whole process safe until it's ready. Once you know which job a structure does, you can usually predict what it looks like — without memorising a checklist.
Reading a Flower's Design From How It Delivers Pollen
A flower's male sex cells travel inside pollen grains, and those grains have to land on a stigma before anything else can happen. There are only two realistic ways for that delivery to occur: a visiting creature carries the grains across, or moving air scatters them by pure chance. Nearly every visible feature of a flower — its colour, its smell, even how much pollen it bothers to make — follows from which of those two routes it depends on.
A flower relying on a visitor only has to persuade one animal to brush past at close range, so it can spend resources on a colourful, perfumed display as bait, a sugary payoff to keep that visitor coming back, and grains with a rough or clingy coat that catches on fur or legs for the short trip. A flower relying on air has nobody to persuade and no aim whatsoever, so it drops the display altogether — plain, unscented, easy to miss — and instead bets on sheer volume: vast numbers of smooth, feather-light grains cast off from anthers dangling loose where a passing current can reach them, with luck eventually snagged by a stigma broad enough to trap whatever drifts by.
Worked Example — Matching a Description to Its Delivery Route
A student is given this clue: "The bloom has minute greenish flaps, gives off no scent at all, and carries long, feathery threads dangling well clear of the bloom."
- Check what the coloured flaps (petals) are doing. Minute, greenish and odourless flaps draw nobody's attention — so this plant clearly isn't spending anything on a display, which rules out depending on a visiting animal.
- Check what the feathery threads (the stigma) are doing. A stigma dangling clear of the bloom, feathery rather than compact and sticky, is shaped to trap grains sweeping past on moving air rather than to snag a passing visitor.
- Combine the two clues: zero spend on attraction plus an exposed, feathery trapping surface both point toward one route — air-carried delivery. (Grasses and a maize tassel are real-world matches for this exact clue set.)
